Have you ever wondered how understanding the brain can completely transform the way children learn, stay organized, and succeed? Whether you’re a teacher trying to engage a distracted classroom or a parent supporting a child who struggles with focus, executive functioning skills are the key to unlocking learning potential.
Children with ADHD don’t lack intelligence or ability—they lack the executive skills that help them manage time, stay organized, regulate emotions, and complete tasks. These skills allow them to thrive in school and beyond. Interestingly, ADHD is not a deficit of attention; it’s misdirected attention. People with ADHD can focus just fine…on things that are novel, stimulating and engaging. Boredom is their kryptonite.
That’s why I recently joined Tiana Fech on The People Teaching People Podcast to discuss how we can shift from outdated systems that aren’t working to practical strategies that do.
What Are Executive Functioning Skills, and Why Do They Matter?
Think of executive functioning skills as the brain’s control center, helping children:
✔ Stay focused and engaged in lessons and tasks
✔ Plan and prioritize their work (and not just cram at the last minute!)
✔ Manage emotions and frustration in learning and daily life
✔ Strengthen memory and problem-solving abilities
For teachers, this means fewer classroom disruptions, more engaged learners, and a smoother learning environment.
For parents, it means less homework stress, fewer meltdowns, and a more confident child who can manage their responsibilities.
But here’s the challenge: These skills aren’t automatically developed—they need to be taught.
From Classroom to Home: Making Executive Functioning a Priority
As the Founder of Kaizen Education Services and creator of The Brain Hub Academy, I’ve worked with countless teachers and parents who are frustrated because their bright, capable children struggle with focus, organization, and self-regulation.
The problem isn’t lack of effort—it’s lack of the right strategies to support brain development.
That’s why I created The Brain Hub Academy—a program designed to help both teachers and parents bring executive functioning skills into schools and homes in a way that’s simple, effective, and sustainable.
