A young child might manage a five-minute task with occasional check-ins. A teenager might work through homework in 45 to 60 minute stretches with short breaks. The skill is not never being distracted. It is the ability to return.
Task initiation. Getting started, especially on something that is boring, hard, or open-ended. A child with strong task initiation can begin a chore soon after being asked, or start a project before the night it is due. A child with weak task initiation is not refusing to begin. Their brain genuinely struggles to cross the gap between “I should do this” and actually doing it.
Planning and prioritization. Mapping out the steps to reach a goal and deciding what matters most. This is the skill behind breaking a book report into manageable pieces, or knowing that the test tomorrow deserves more attention tonight than the project due next week.
Organization. Building and keeping systems for managing materials and information. The missing permission slip, the backpack that swallows papers whole, the desktop with two hundred files named “untitled” all point to organization still under construction.
Time management. Sensing how long things take and how much time is left. Many children genuinely cannot feel time passing. Ten minutes and an hour feel roughly the same, which is why “we are leaving in five minutes” so often lands as a surprise.
Goal-directed persistence. Sticking with something through the boring middle to reach the finish. This is the muscle behind studying for a test that is a week away or practicing a skill that is not fun yet.
Cognitive flexibility. Shifting gears when circumstances change. A flexible thinker can adapt when the plan falls through or accept a different role than the one they wanted. A child who struggles here gets “locked in,” and any change feels threatening or overwhelming.

What does executive function get mistaken for?
It helps to be clear about what these skills are not, because the misconceptions do real damage.
Executive function is not intelligence. Plenty of very bright children have significant executive function challenges, which is exactly why the gap between their ability and their output can be so confusing and frustrating for everyone.
It is not laziness or defiance. A child who cannot start a task is not lazy. A child who resists transitions is not being difficult on purpose. Reading these behaviors as willful turns a skills problem into a relationship battle, and the skills still do not improve.

Coach the feeling, not just the task. When frustration rises, stay calm and steady beside them. Your regulated presence helps their brain settle enough to keep going. This is support, not rescue. You are teaching regulation by lending yours.
Praise the process. Notice effort and strategy, not just results. “You broke that project into parts, that is exactly how it is done” builds the skill far better than “good grade.”
